When film was first being invented scientists and artists were both amazed and in awe of the idea that we could capture human and animal movement on film There was a great deal of experimentation with the idea of a Walking Sequence. Eadweard Muybridge was an English photographer who experimented with trying to photograph walking in a sequence of stills. These eventually were animated and later filmed to show true motion.

Walking takes the Eadweard Muybridge original walking man images when motion pictures were first being discovered and uses these images to create his own exploration of walking. The images take on an abstract art feeling. As I watched I couldn't help but think of the art work of Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp.
In Animation, an animator learns to walk a character across the screen fairly early. Using the movement of a camera to capture the movement of walking is the basis for this next assignment.

Think about Walking....we all learn to walk at an early age. At the time it is one of our greatest accomplishments. It is celebrated. In life we use the metaphor of taking the first step to signify starting something new. As you start your research develop your idea and consider how you will interpret walking. Is it the movement of an actual walk or the more metaphorical action of moving forward in life?

Over the last eight years Artist Evewright has been developing the Walking Drawings project, a series of live experimental art installations involving the public. Evewright creates large-scale drawings on selected ‘sandscapes’ along the British coastline using an old- fashioned tractor, rotavator and rake. These tremendous shapes are then brought to life when members of the public and horseriders are invited to walk their lines to engage with his art.
His most recent installation, which took place in September 2010 on Silecroft Beach in Cumbria, was poetically captured on film and photographed. This visual record forms his exhibition Walking Drawings: Across the Estuaries – showcasing two stunning short films and a series of photographic prints.
Every day we are surrounded by people we don't know. In every city a mass of people paradoxically leads to greater isolation and individualism - or does it? What is beyond this narrative? What social and spatial cues take over when we don't know the people surrounding around us? How are we engaging in a shared sense of space, and are when and where are we conscious of it? What is the role of this limited but intimately connected cultural cohesion? How does our physicality and embodied awareness contribute to this spatial conversation?
This experimental video shows footage of a commuter walking through the tunnels of the London Underground. It was shot using a depth-sensing camera and treated with a collage technique to overlay color from other video streams onto the point clouds. Moving a virtual camera around the scene in post-production, we can re-examine this daily journey from the perspective of a segment of total space, and see the intersections with passers-by.
